Treating a new snake for parasites

chrismorasky Nov 02, 2005 11:16 AM

I recently received a ball python that is over 10 years old and has been kept by quite a few people before me, under a variety of conditions. She appears healthy, but spends a lot of time in her water dish. I have read that can be a sign of parasites.

Do you test new animals for parasites or just treat them? What do you recommend treating them with?

Thank you.

What I would do is first purchase Reptile Relief for the benefit of the snake. He/She gets quick relief and is comfortable then I would put her in a tupperware container with clean substrate while I spray her tank with Provent-a-Mite.

Some people would say to take everything out of the tank first, but I think this gives the critters a chance to get into other places and the container says that we don't need to remove anything at all but the water. (bear with me) After one day I would remove the water dish and clean and disinfect that and also everything else and throw out the substrate. Then clean and disinfect the tank and contents and put in new substrate and all the hides etc, everything BUT the water and spray again...This tima, after the spray dries and the fumes are gone, you can put the snake back in and the water dish. Before you put the snake back in, spray her down with Reptile Relief again and checking under the chin and around the anal vents and heat vents.

OOPS! To test try putting the snake on news paper or paper towels to see if you can see the little black moving dots and connect them to the fact that it has mites. LOL But I would prefer to treat...because while testing it gives those critters a chance to get everywhere else! The treatment doesn't hurt anything.
