major problem with my newest

ashley73386 Nov 02, 2005 04:06 PM

Im so sad my baby Roo still hasn't eaten. A little back ground on my situation. So about two weeks ago i got home from work and my boyfriend surprised me with a new baby leo ( Roo). Well he didn't know any better so he put the new guy in petre my older geckos cage. Well i took him out and put him in a temp quarantine container and then i had them sexed. Well it turned out roo was a male and petre was a female, since i don't plan on breeding i had to get roo his own enclosure. Well he has been in his new enclosure for about a week in a half and hasn't eaten anything. I took him to the vet and they said he doesn't have any parasited he might have just been stressed and maybe had some digestion problems. Sooo they gave me basically dog food and bene bac and told me to feed him 5 oz of the dog food and 1 oz of the bene bac for 10 days. The first day me and my boyfriend agaist his will feed roo the dog food and the bene bac and as i held him he threw up on me so i thought maybe we just gave him to much. The next day i gave him just 3 oz of the dog food and put him back in his tank. I checked on him about 5 minutes later and he had threw up again. So the next day i just gave him the bene bac and he kept that down and i have done that for the past 3 days and he still hasn't eaten. I was putting crickets in the tank but he wasn't eating them so i put a few mealworms in a bowl so he can eat them if he wants at night. I really don't know what else to do he has been pooping since i starting giving him the bene bac but it is all white colored and no brown. Also because i know someone will ask his temps and good and he has everything he could need. Please help im already so attached to the little guy

I've never heard of giving a leo dog food, that could be whats making him vomit. When my leo Pheonix stopped eating due to a parasite problem, I fed him mashed up mealworms and cricket abdomens through a syringe. I also supplemented him with a tiny amount of Strawberry (never chocolate!) Ensure twice a week. Ensure is packed with vitamins and minerals and is good for weight gain. Good luck with the little guy!!!

Those are good suggestions. You could also give him a very small amount of plain yogurt with active cultures. Not too much, because it is very rich in protien. That'll help out in case he's dehydrated. I would also raise his temps slightly, depending on what they are now.

would that be the a/d dogfood? I have used it with some success, but I water it down slightly, and add some supplement. Not sure what bene bac is. I personally have not tried Ensure yet, but I have heard the vanilla works well. Is he of good condition otherwise? Is he was very underweight when you got him, you could be fighting an uphill battle, as he may have had some permanent damage due to neglect/starvation before he came to you. If he is not pooping, despite eating, you may have an impaction problem which will need immediate attn. What does his belly look like?

i am going through the exact same problem as we speak. 2 weeks and she still hasnt eaten. took her to the vet last night and they said she looks great, but treated her for parasites anyway at no charge . i have a follow up next week and they will determine where to go from there. but she only lost 1.5 grams since i got her 2 weeks ago... very good. moniter the weight if you can, along w/ prior suggestions...

ok so last night i tried to feed him again he threw up alittle bit, but i think he kept alittle bit down. What do they give leo's if they have parasites? The vbet told me he believed he was fine but they couldn't do a fecal because he hasn't pooped? Is there anything i could do for him?

geckogrl6 Nov 03, 2005 10:24 AM

I dont know y your vet said he thinks hes fine. He is obviously not. You should get a second piinion ASAP from a QUALIFIED REPTILE vet. Panacur is used for most parasites, but the vet is right, if hes not pooping, he cant do a fecal. How big is this guy? You need to rule out impaction ASAP, and after so many days, if it is an impaction, his chances are waning. He would probably need surgery to correct it. You may want to try a laxative as well, to see if hes only slightly impacted, that may get it going again. I dont want to tell you to give up, but really its not sounding good. Is he losing weight?
