Red Eared Slider Water Depth

the_nis Nov 02, 2005 07:14 PM

I bought a new 40 gallon breeder for my adult red eared slider. I was just wondering everyone's opinion on how deep I should make the water in the aquarium...Thanks!

As deep as you can make it, as long as the turtle can safely haul out and bask. Also make sure he can't escape over the rim of the tank.

Yeah I wanted to make the water fairly deep because my turtle loves to swim but he's not so coordinated with getting out onto the basking spot. I've tried a million different schemes with the basking spot and he still seems to have problems.

For deep-water tanks, there are several basking systems invoving a suspended platform witn a rubber stair tread ramp that angles into the water and may even be partially floating and hinged to accomodate changing water depth. If you put the basking platform in the rear or on one side lf the tank, you can surround it with a clear plastic raised rim only in this area to prevent escape and still utilize the full depth of the tank. In the past, I even developed a platform outside the tank itself with ramp access from the tank and surrounded by clear plastic high enough to contain the turtles.
