NOR Press: Carnivorous lizard in toilet

Nov 03, 2005 07:05 AM

Dear Tegu-people: You can see a photo of the critter involved in this story by calling up the URL (see at end of Norwegian-language press item. Please note the difference in tone between the two items. respects, Wes

AFTENPOSTEN (Oslo, Norway) 03 November 05 Carnivorous lizard in toilet (Jonathan Tisdall)
A three-year-old boy got the fright of his life on a trip to the toilet on Wednesday.
The youngster was lucky that his mother had come along to open and raise the toilet seat. The startled pair found themselves face to face with a carnivorous teju, or tegus, a large black and yellow South American lizard, newspaper Bergensavisen reports.
"Not a nice experience," is the father's summary. He came running when he heard the sound of screaming from the family toilet.
The Akvariet (aquarium) in Bergen was called, and reptile expert Remi Andersen paid a house call. He confirmed that the animal was a 1.5 kilo (3.3 lb) teju.
The teju is capable of holding its breath for half an hour, which probably explains how it managed to navigate its way through the sewer and up into the family toilet. The family is lucky they looked, rather than sat, first.
"The chances are greater that the lizard would have taken a bite out of someone's 'ham', than that it wouldn't have," Akvariet director Kees Ekeli told Bergensavisen.
It is illegal to import or own such reptiles in Norway, and the Akvariet is now considering arranging to keep the beast.

Alle nasjonale medier har vært her.

It may be funny, but it needs to be taken seriously, that is like the tenth time in two weeks that they have found a reptile in a toilet or public place. This needs to stop, if people cant take care of their animals they need to stop buying them, now the tegu in the picture was obviously well taken care of, and it is most likely an escaped animal, we need to be responsible and make sure that our animals dont get lost, this includes dogs and cats. I think cats are gross and I will kill one if it wanders to my property, wow that was alot of rambling, sorry to blow up it just infuriates me when there are escaped reptiles its just more fuel for the fire
thanks

Wow and I just thought it was a funny story.

I am afraid I find it very hard to believe that a Tegu could navigate thorugh the sewage pipes all the way to a little hanging bum. Maybe they use 6 inch main all the way to the crapper?

What kind of toilets do they have in Norway in which a 4 foot tegu can "managed to navigate its way through the sewer and up into the family toilet"?
They must be alot different than her in the States.

I want to die just like my uncle, asleep at the wheel, not yelling and screaming like the passengers in his car!
