What needs to be checked at vet

mikeha Nov 03, 2005 01:28 PM

Other than parasites, what should be checked for newly acquired BPs at the vet? HOW should they check and treated? I'm mainly concerned about any disease or virus that can spread to my other snakes. Also, anyone know of a good herp vet in the Gainesville, FL area?

Thanks - Mike

A good herp vet will know what to look for. Here's some of the things I think they should be looking at:

* General physical appearance. Does that animal have any blisters, lacerations or similar problems?
* General behavior. Does the animal act normal? Does it's head list or can it right itself when placed upside down?
* Fecal sample to test for internal parasites.
* Open the mouth (gently) and check for any abnormalities.
* Sex the animal for you - and be accurate

This should get you started.

I recue a few snakes per year(all types), and my vet also checks the musculature, and ribs.

He also listens with the stethescope to the breathing for any early signs of RI.

Can't think of anything else right now...
