I imagine that I will get royally flamed for this but I can't take it anymore. Almost everyone is using a non-existent word in the description of one of the morphs. If you use a dictionary, there is no such word as AXANTHIC. The proper word is XANTHIC. When you add an "a or an" in front of a word, it means: not! So axanthic means not xanthic. I know the majority of the improper use will probably not stop, but at least I have put my two cents worth in to the mix. The non-reptile people already think we are crazy, let's not give them any reason to think we can't even use a dictionary. Source dictionary is online at www.m-w.com.

Peace and love to all!

Xantic means increased yellow pigmentation

Axanthic means lacking yellow pigmentation.

Those are true representation of reptile mutations which dictionnaries don't explain.

While we are at it...is "dictionnaries" really a word?

Definition of Xanthic...

Xanthic Xan"thic, a. [Gr. xanqo`s yellow: cf. F. xanthique.]
1. Tending toward a yellow color, or to one of those colors,
green being excepted, in which yellow is a constituent, as
scarlet, orange, etc.

2. (Chem.)
(a) Possessing, imparting, or producing a yellow color;
as, xanthic acid.

Axanthic = not xanthic = not possessing yellow colour.
an Axanthic BP is a black and white snake without yellow. What's the problem?

You are correct that a lot of terms are used incorrectly in the BP world. Axanthic is not one of them

He stands corrected, thats classic and was a good chuckle to see. Hope he comes back though after being corrected, most people never do

What drives me crazy:

sells, used as sales

where, used as were

were, used as where

I stand corrected and am humbled in the presence of the quality of responses. Another of the ones that tickle my ire is: breed for bred.

Peace

Hey no worries, what bothers me even more is;

Het-Snow, no such thing, it's a Double-Het Snow

How about for Salmon Boa strains, Double Het Sunglow, no such thing, it's a Salmon Het-Albino.

Any others?

Randall_Turner Nov 04, 2005 10:22 AM

Gotta correct you on the double het sunglow. There are double het sunglows. If the salmon/hypo gene is a visual het rather then the homozygous form then it is a double het sunglow.

I partly agree with you but Salmon is a Co-dominant mutation and not simple recessive. I hear what you are saying in that a visual co-dom can be considered the Hetero form of the Super. However we don't use this type of terminology in the hobby.

Why not call a spade, a spade! Salmon Het-Albino

Randall_Turner Nov 04, 2005 12:22 PM

Wrong again. Sorry but Salmon/hypo is not codominant. It is dominant. The homozygous form and visual heterozygous form are not distinguishable on a regular basis (and not at all in 99% of cases) The heterozygous salmon is what is incorrectly referred to as a codominant salmon, and a homozygous salmon is usually referred to as either a super or dominant.

This inaccurate teaching unfortunately is rampant in the reptile hobby. I myself used wrong terminology for many years until I was shown the errors of what I had learned.

"This inaccurate teaching unfortunately is rampant in the reptile hobby."

Agreed. Sucks doesn't it. It's hard to re-learn something after you find out you were taught incorrectly the first time. The one that gets under my skin is related to the boas too... "Guyanans". This one especially hits home since half my family are GUYANESE!

lol, I've been guilty of that one many times. I didn't even know it was innacurate until last year when it was pointed out on the boa forum.
