Galvanized water trough for turtles

ucsda Nov 03, 2005 03:18 PM

I have map turtles, sliders, cooters, and a couple musks. Not too many but im wanting to get a large-sized tub, like one of them horse troughs on farms, but is the galvanized metal tub safe/harmless for most of them to be in? thanks.

I'd be leery of the metal type tubs only because I've seen them before with chips in them & the chipped spots were rusty.
Do you know you can buy large Rubbermaid type tubs at hardware stores used for mixing cement? I'm not sure if you can buy one of those that would be as large as the metal tubs you're talking about but I do know that some people have used these cement mixing tubs for large species such as some softshell turtles & alligator snapping turtles.

These tanks have been used for many years, even by zoos, to house "off-exhibit" turtles. Recently, the Rubbermaid stock tanks have been replacing them. I kept turtles for many years in a galvanized stock tank.

Hey good deal! Glad to hear from someone who has used them. I'd thought if a horse can drink out of it then a turtle could live in it but if they're rusty in spots it would worry me.
Did you ever have a rust problem? How well did these things hold up for you?
If they aren't rusty then I'd think your turtles would have a lot of room to swim & that would be nice for them.
