desertkingsnake Nov 03, 2005 05:37 PM

I'm am just at wit's end with my desert king. I'm tired of having to struggle to get her to eat mice and only succeeding every 2-3 weeks. Anyone know of a site i can get feeder snakes from for cheap?

I was skimming thru these just after moving, your reply caught my eye.

You had me cackling. I know exactly what you meant - and agree!

Have you tried scenting? I ask because seeing you can easily house a Corn or better yet a Garter in a small cage you may have better results from simply scenting as opposed to the costly and in my opinion uneccesary option of feeding the King snakes. Better yet, have you tried messing with temps?

you never know when they are looking for full time work. You can't trust what they say during the "interview" process. Carry on.

I'm just really frustated with how hard i've tried to get her to eat and how it's not worked. I'm pretty sure she's not eating because it's cooled down alot in the past 2-3 weeks here in Sacramento. It was about 83-90F during the day to now where its about 72-76F in the middle of the day. I think i'll see if she wants to hibernate. I was told to do this i should just turn off the heat. But i don't know if this would be all that good for her. I was thinking about just leaving her heat on low during nights and real cold days. Would this trigger a hibernation response? Should i even try to get her to hibernate?

Cal kings eat mice with no problem. Mice are part of their natural diet. As well as snakes.

Because your king is regularly consuming mice, its more likely your conditions are suboptimal. You do understand, some people feed less often then that, for reasons of longevity.

Try explaining your husbandry and cage conditions and someone may be able to help you, all without having to find "cheap" feeder snakes. Good luck FR
