do they have a chance.....?

randi Jul 22, 2003 05:21 AM

I was at the pet store the other day and saw a horrible display of animal husbandry (for a change). They had a dozen or so baby beardies that had started to eat at eachother. They tried to say it was in the shipping but I don't totally believe it. Most were missing limbs or totally lame in one or more legs. A few were just missing toes though. A couple had no front legs (I don't see them having much of a chance). Others had partial limbs hanging and nasty looking. It brought tears to my eyes since I spend time with each one of my herps every day. I have beardies, leopard geckos and crested geckos. This store had the nerve to try to sell them for $20-$30 each. I told them they were crazy. They said people feel sorry for them so they are being bought.
My question is.....should I try to rescue them and give them away to good home or not bother since there isn't much hope?
Thanks,
Randi

I would try anything I could to save them. There is always hope.

be sure of your facts, be dead sure! if it is obvious the pet store is keeping them improperly, take pictures, they cant stop you. if they threaten to call the police , you call them along with the media and fish and game dept and the aspca and anyone else that you can. give them BAD PUBLICITY. that will do the most good. then you may prevent other animals from being mistreated. you can also NAME NAMES. what pet store, where is it, what is there phone number?

rescuing the babies is a wonderfull gesture. best of luck

I agree with what beardie dragon advised. Check woth your local animal shelter, they may already have complaints about the store. The most important thing to have is proof, you are more likely to be taken seriously if you can show the perticular act of neglect or abuse.

to bring in more as "someone will fell sorry for them and buy them"

Its sad they had to suffer someones neglect, but if they sell them, they will only replace them with more that will suffer the same fate.

I would offer to take them and save what ones could be saved, put doen the ones that can not. I would take pictures and ask them the owners/home office name and contact info, then file a police report and with animal welfare
