I realize people need to make money, but $400 for...

PGoss Nov 04, 2005 07:34 AM

spark plugs and new wires. What a crock! That's three or four months worth of feeders or a new kid in the snake room. Man that hurts. I never thought I would have to sell snakes for auto repairs. Maybe I should post in the "trades" classifieds.

"Boas to trade for grease monkey! Preferably house-broken, but not required."

Sorry, just had to get that out.

You got scalped! Should have done your own plugs and wires, and bought another snake.
Nice pic, btw. Argentine?

and tape over the "check engine" light on your instrument panel. Most of those lights are timed to coincide with your mechanic's boat payment!

Thats what I do all day while I think about my snakes and we are some of the hardest working and underpaid around. Just think about it home electrical, and plumbing hasen't changed much in the last 50 years, and those guys are getting more than top dollar. We have tens of thousands of dollars of equipment while they have a van and maybe 5k worth of tools. We work hard for our money and deserve every bit we get!!! Thanks Vinnie

ReBall1 Nov 04, 2005 11:16 AM

I used to work as a machanic, that is before I became one of those high priced construction guys(I do concrete now).I worked in a yard fixing constuction equipment and on the side I would, an still do fix all my friends and thier friends desert toys, like quads and dirt bikes ect.. anyways it seems like whenever somebody wants something done, they want it done yesterday and wanna pay next to nothing if anything at all. Same thing with constuction all these people want stuff done on their house but dont wanna pay up. People will come out and talk about how easy all the work they want done is and how it should only take a few days and we want way too much money blah blah. I say if thats the case then why am I here? Do IT YOUR SELF! Bottom line is the job only looks easy cause the guy doin it has done it so long he makes it look easy and we all need to eat and look out for our loved ones so who cares if you make out a little better sometimes cause theres alot of times you wind up eating your shorts on a job and loseing money. just my 2 cents Rich

Not a construction worker, not a grease monkey (at least not professionally) Have always fixed my own stuff and am almost done remodelling my kitchen. Made my own cabinets, replumbed in copper and installed a laminate floor. I only brought in three trades to help. Texture guy to fix some wall buckling and texture ceiling. Window crew to install new DP windows in the whole house and a granite crew for the countertop. My hats off to those that do this for a living, My kitchen looks GREAT, but it was a LOT of hard work. I probably in many cases overdid it and did things the hard way which if I did it all the ime I would ahve known better.

JUST KIDDING!!!!

PGoss Nov 04, 2005 10:28 PM

if I'm getting $400 worth of work and it's someone who gives damn doing it, then take my money. Not a problem. I drive 1,000 miles a week. My car is practically my home. I take damn good care of it. Since I live in it, it is spotless inside. When I pick it up from an oil change I don't want to see oil all over the seat, steering wheel, carpet, and door. I know you can't be a good mechanic and stay clean, but come on. I'm sure you are good at what you do. I know I would not have a clue if you threw me under the hood. All I've done is changed a couple spark plugs. I do believe it took longer than 10 minutes. Auto mechanics is a skill, just like everything else. For this car, it may be worth $400 to have someone change the plugs and wires. That was not my problem. My issue was the unexpected problem with my car. When you travel like I do, your car is your life. There are few things worse than seeing that check engine light pop up. I know this is a pathetic thing to gripe about, but I just felt like griping. Keep up the good work and keep buying the boas. Sometimes your reputation is all you have.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I just spent $1100 getting my cv joints on my axels fixed and all new tires. I was like "damn I could of got an albino for that price"

... auto repairs.

Sure! Why not?

I worked in a professional shop for several years, was a certified MASTER TECHNICIAN for Porsche/Audi and have worked on everything from a D5 Caterpillar on down.. I just crawled out from under my 4Runner.. it needed a Pitman arm, steering damper and front wheel- bearing pack and adjust.

Tell me what you got.

but you guys have to admit, $400 for plugs and wires? Come on!!! Plugs cost about $1 a piece. Even if you got platinum or titanium, it wouldn't cost more than $50 for a set of six. And wires, maybe $25. So where is the other $325 going? It takes me 10 minutes to change mine and I have no professional experience. Anyone charging $325 for labor on plugs and wires is scamming. I would be angry about a mechanic charging those prices than I would about people getting upset about it. Just my $.02

I wanted to say sorry for your loss but the post got so long I was afraid it would get lost. In regard to the car post you are 100% correct about part prices. What these guys dont realize is just because you can buy gargage at auto zone cheap dosent mean we will use that crap plus we need to make some money off the parts. In regard to the labor there are many cars where the upper intake manifold needs to be removed to change the plugs and wires. If you can do any set of plugs and wires in 10 mins please come by I will hire you for $100.00 an hour you would be well worth it working that fast!!! I have some Mitsubishi, Caddy and Ford Pick-up tune-ups for you. lol

and again I have nothing against mechanics, I know a couple of really nice ones that would bend over backward to make sure the job is done right. I've just seen the other side of that spectrum as well. I grew up on a Ford escort where I was changing the plugs and wires before I could drive it, and right now on my Jetta, it too is pretty simple with the right tool. When it came time for my tune up I was getting estimates of over $700 and all they were doing was changing the plugs and doing an oil change and then checking everything else. If any hoses or belts needed to be tightened or changed it would be in addition to that cost. I jsut don't understrand where the money goes!

I mean no offense to the mechanic here and again have nothing against the good ones, but a good manual and the right tool go a long way!
