Are "super" mealworms O.K. to feed leopard geckos?

moonpie Jul 22, 2003 07:23 AM

I have been buying both regular and super mealworms. The super mealworms are a lot bigger (they are not Zoophobas), and they never seem to pupate. The guy at the store said that no growth hormones were used, so how did they get this big? Are they safe to use as feeders? Some are close to 1 1/2 inches long. My gecko really likes them, but I am kind of worried about using them. Any ideas or advice?

I have never seen a mealworm get that big without some kind of hormone used. Not really for sure though because I had a pet shop owner tell me the same but I think some suppliers are full of poop because word got out and now is hurting their bussiness.

Giant mealworms aka king mealworms are fed growth hormones to get them that big. I personally think they are full of it when they say giant mealworms grow to that size naturally just so they can sell more. Superworms naturally grow to that size, they are much better for our critters.

I haven't heard anything about Super Mealworms. You might be referring to Giant Mealworms maybe or Superworms...??

superworms are fine to use as a feeder. it is the "giant" mealworms you have to watch out for.
