Found this guy injured...

FloridaHogs Nov 04, 2005 05:27 PM

Found this guy injured at my inlaws. Looks like a bicycle ran ovr him. I think hi is a juvi Black Racer ( oh yeah I am in NW Florida. He is very lethargic. I put a betadine solution on the injury and in a 90 degree enclousure. Not sure if he will make it. He has moved some, but appears to be no movement below the injury.

Yeah, looks like Coluber to me. This is a common "what is it?" snake around here.

Looks bad but I have seen worse survive. Drop the temp to around 75-80F. 90F is too hot, you may dehydrate it, plus speed up any infection.

Good luck!

He passed on. I did see him crawl some, but he just dragged the area past the wound. He was pretty far gone when I found him. No tounge flickering, and very little reaction to being picked up. I knew chances were slim, but I wanted to at least give him a chance, with hopes of releaseing him. Here is a close up of the wound if anybody is curious. The skin was peeled back on both sides of his body, and the whole wound was enlarged and "mashed" looking. Hard to see that from the pic. What is the best course of action should I ever find myself in this situation again. I only had him for about 2 hours, so I think he was already heading out when I found him.

It looks like a black racer, but he is way to light in color in my opinion, so im not positive he is, maybe in northern florida they are different colors from down here in south fl. I dn i may be wrong. Sorry to hear about your lose.

I was not planing on keeping the little guy, just wanted to give him a fighting chance. When I think "Black Racer" I picture something like the guy pictured below. I found him last weekend at a womens meeting. He was big and bad!! I shooed him away so the other ladies would not have heart attacks. He was about 5 ft. and had attitude. Of course he was in shed, but I have never run across one that wasn't nippy. Not what I picture keeping in my house for an extended period of time.
