Brumation Question

quantumhigh Nov 05, 2005 12:28 PM

Ok so I need to put my lizard in Brumation. But I'am scared. How do you guys and gals maintain a constant temp. of 50-55f? I have heard of people putting them in a frig.(my frig is a 36f, I dont want a lizardcicle) Also how long do YOU keep them sleeping for? I have heard conflicting time periods for different sources.

Happy Herper,
Aaron

Sorry if someone posted info in fourm already.

I am one of the least experienced here, I suspect... but I brumate my kids in a critter keeper with paper towels, placed in a small apartment sized refridgerator.

Since this refridgerator is not used to store food, I crank the thermostat all the way up, which brings the temp to around 45 F. Then, to raise it just a tad more, I tape a cardboard spool to the inside of the door, then duct-tape the door as far shut as it will go with the spool in the way. It ends up with the door cracked open about one inch, which keeps the temp around 50.

I take my kids out every week for a few minutes to check them and put a few drops of water on the tip of the upper lip so they can drink. Then right back into the fridge.

Hi,
This was also my first year brumating. I had the same question as you. When I stopped feeding them and turned off the lights they went into brumation, at room temp. They have stayed the same weight and its been two months. During the day they do come out and drink but still are half a sleep. One day the temp got near eighty and they got really active and dug a little. So as long as it stays dark I think that it should be okay.

Good luck,
Morgan
