Three wildcaught Eastern hognoses in ONE day!

BlueKing Nov 05, 2005 05:01 PM

Went herping today to see if I could find some Kingsnakes, BUT: found these three today in the Sandhills of North Carolina. The two larger ones (a male & female) where found coiled together under the same board! Its November - not April I thought!
The "uglier", smaller one was found at a different site under a tin sheet! (The male is the large black & orange one) The pic is kinda' bad and does NOT show the orange colors very well, because that male is orange & black all the way down!

Forgot to mention: The smaller hognose is in the "Blue" (which makes her look rather ugly & gray). . .

That male is absolutly georgious!! How big is big? I have a 24 inch male that is truly a "hog" He was also WC, well wild rescue, fertilizer guy was gonna stomp him. had him 3 years now and he is spoiled!! Waits for me to put the food in his mouth now!! lost my 2 females this fall, so I am looking for some more girls. Not sure where to look when walking around. All I seem to find are HUGE cottonmouths (4 to 5 feet with heads the size of a large mans fist), or big ole black racers. Much prefer the hoggies.

The female is pretty also, very similar to one I lost. Thought I had nursed her back to health, but evidently she had more problems than I knew about.

Glad you had such good luck.

Thanks . . . The female in the pic looks like she's had a "Oh-my gosh-look-it's-a-cobra-lets-club-it-to-death-injury" on her lower half on her body in two spots. Luckily she somehow escaped and it looks like an old injury but with some ugly calcification bumps on her spine and a few missing ribs. But she does seem healthy enough to breed. I have a female okeetee corn that was nearly cut in half a long time ago and survived. She bred and laid 22 eggs this year and they ALL hatched!!! Snakes are SURVIVORS!!!
But I agree: (Been herping for over 25 years) Hognoses ARE a rare find for me too and I usually find Cornsnakes, copperheads, racers, kingsnakes, watersnakes, etc. for many months before I find just ONE hoggie!!!

I haven't heard anything about releasing the hogs, so I am assuming you are keeping them. I find some irony in that you post about how rare the hognoses are, but yet don't have any problems with collecting 3 at a time. I hope that releasing them is still an option.

Good job Zee. They are some colorful, robust beauties.

Thanks, Steve! That big male is the first one I ever found that has orange coloring all the way down to his tail. Most of the others I have found usually only have orange around the neck area.

Hey! What's up! Sure wish I had the room for these guys! I would love to breed them, but you know that "Golden corn snake" project is taking up too much of my time & space already. . . So I don't know. . .
