my water dragon passed away

TiaTegu Jul 22, 2003 09:09 AM

Hi, I am new to this forum.
On Sunday July 20 my beautiful 2 1/2 year old male water dragon passed away in my arms. He went from being healthy to very sick in a few days. We took him to the vet on Friday the 18th. He had a swelling in his jaw that ballooned up overnight. The vet lanced the abscess and sent a culture to the lab. He gave him a shot of Amikacin and said we would have to inject him a few more times. When he looked at it under the microscope he told us there was abnormal red and white blood cells but he would need to get the report back to see what was going on.
Jett became sicker and sicker and seemed to be struggling for air. I could not get ahold of the vet on the weekend.
It was awful to watch him suffer and I hope no one has to go through that. He died in my arms on Sunday afternoon and it was actually a relief that he passed.
The good news is that he had mated with my female dragon and it looks like the eggs are fertile. We are praying that at least 1 hatches successfully.
I have yet to get a report back from the vet as to what was wrong. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Do water dragons get cancer? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Water dragons can get cancer, but it sounds like the abcess was an infection, which had spread to his blood stream and overwhelmed his system. I am very sorry for your loss, hopefully the vet can give a more qualified answer than mine.

sorry about your loss i bet he was a handsome guy. anyways i had a water dragon pass away about a year ago (s)he broke his jaw it didnt swell but i thought it was kinda around the same lines as jett. i had to give him injections in the morning, force feed him it was awful and lose 400$ and all he did was suffer and die in the end. sometimes its better for the animal to just die to rather suffer. anyways im sure jett had the best home possible.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I have lost many animals in my times with them, so I do understand. Apparently, anyone and everything can get cancer, and you just never know. As with all life, treat it kindly, enjoy your time with them, and keep on enjoying new experiences with all things living. Rufffs
