Hi
I have 3 females and 4 males of Hyperolius variabilis.
I got them about 3 weeks ago. Now I have following problem, the females are eating like hell and all of them are full of eggs as I can see them shine through their belly. out of the 4 males 1 was calling like crazy from day 3 after I got them. A second male would respong and call once in a while answering/competing the first one. But about 4 days ago the males stopped calling. I only hear a brief call of the no 1 male once in a while for just a few seconds. Luckily I recorded him a few days back and when I play it he starts calling a bit but then also stops again.
Now my question is, Do I have any chances the males still will fertilize those eggs / hop on the females when they are dropping the eggs or are my chances very slim ?
Is there anything else I can do ? I am familiar with Hyperolius and of course have been spraying them a couple times a day toward the evening.
I have a few male Hyperolius rubrovermiculatus in another room that are calling, they sound exactly the same and I was thinking maybe putting a few in the variabilis tank will get the males variabilis calling again ? Or will I then likely just end up with the rubrovermiculatus fertilizing the variabilis females ? Would such eggs actually be fertile ?
Any advise is highly appreciated as time is not on my side as the females seem ready to drop the eggs any time now.
