Philothamnus species ? 1

doglovers Nov 06, 2005 08:45 AM

I recently got two new species of Philothamnus from East Africa.
I have been searching for a good key to be able to get to know what species they are.
The first one remind me a lot of Green Mamba babies. It´s snout is longer then the other species I got, so my first idea was Hapsidophrys. But no species of Hapsidophrys fits the desciption.
If anyone has an idea. please contact me at impotrading.hb@telia.com

Since you know the locality I can sugest that you get:

A FIELD GUIDE TO THE REPTILES OF EAST AFRICA-Stephen Spawls

ISBN 0-12-656470-1

It has a key to Philothamus.

I have the book. But no species in that one comes close to the pointed head that Species 1 have.
Here is one more photo on Species 1

In my Zambia book there are some great photos of P. semivariegatus with a head like that. It also notes that P.s. is found in populations that lack the dark markings and tend towards blue anteriorly. It is quite variable a the name suggests.

My guess is that is snake 1.

That is the Angolan Green snake-Philothamnus Angolensis, you cant really tell from the Book because the picture they have its head is pointing towards the camera, but if you go to google and type in Angolan Green-snake for images they should have a pic of its snout.

That species is most likely the speckled Green Snake- Philothamnus Punctatus.

I ment to add it to species 2, speckled Green Snake- Philothamnus Punctatus
