building racks for gerbils and snakes! PLEASE RESPOND

cold_blooded May 18, 2003 01:29 PM

Hi! I need to make to racks, And I have no clue how to do it.
I need one for gerbils, with six tubs, all with the same amount of floor room as a 10 gallon, and tall enough for medium mouse wheels. For the snake rack, I need 6 tubs, all with the same amount of floor space as a 55 gallon. I want each tub to roll out for easy acess. the tubs need to be tall enough for branches. How do you supply light to them? ANd, what other companys make big tubs other than rubbermaid/ (rubbermaid is owned by a company that does animal testing) PLEASE RESPOND!!!

I don't have a lot of time at the moment, but you should really post a request on the feeder forum as well. Maybe you already have.

There have been some fantastic rodent rack designs posted over there and I'm sure you can find all types of links.

Rodent racks are a lot trickier to build than snake racks so if you don't have a lot of experience with wood-working etc., this may prove very difficult.

As far as big boxes, I'll post a picture of my large box rack.

The boxes are about 33" x 16" x 13" (LxWxH), but the floor area is only about 28" x 14" due to the tapered walls.

I don't recall the floor area of a 55 gallon, but I'm pretty sure it is considerable bigger than the floor area of any commericially made plastic tote on the market.

Sterilite, for example, makes a 50 gallon tote that is 43"x22"x18". However, the sides are solid colored and the floor area is only about 36" x 18", which is smaller than a 40 gallon aquarium, I believe.

If that's too small, you'd have to look for industrial shipping boxes that are very expensive.

Another expensive choice would be to have boxes plastic-welded for you.

A floor area of 36x18 (648 sq in) is actually larger than a 55 gallon, which is 48x12 (576 sq in). I have seen some sterilite boxes that are about 33x20 (660 sq in), which should be large enough. I don't know how much smaller the floor dimensions are, though.

Thanks for responding. I decided to only put my kings and garters in racks, not my pythons, but they still need to be big. I found some boxes at zellers that would work. How do you build them to rollout on shelves? What about light?
