Setting them free... ?

chubbs Jul 22, 2003 09:51 AM

I was recently given quite a few red eared sliders along with two mississippi (mud? map?) turtles. I did not want them to begin with, and do not want to keep them because I know I can not care for them properly because I am rarely home and do not have the space. I would like to set them free, but I have no idea what kind of environment they normally live in. Seeing that I live in Pennsylvania, I'm afraid that this might not be a good place to set them free. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

My first thought would be further south. I'm sure they're used to a significantly warmer water and arent familiar with the hibernation habits.

I was curious about the same thing with my RES. I can take care of them and have the space etc. but at some point theyre gonna get to big for me to provide an appropriate home for them.

Releasing captive turtles is never a good option, find a reptile rescue or a good home for them instead.

Res are not native to pennsylvania. It is highyl illegal to set them free. Have you considered giving them to a shelter?

recently they did a survey of all the wildlife in nyc central park--the red eared slider is there in droves. i dont think they are naturally found that far north, so i wonder if that population derives from people letting the turts loose?

alligators in the sewers!!

Do not set them free. While sliders are cold tolerant for PA. The maps may not be. Where are you located in PA?

Please contact turtlehomes Check out the site. www.turtlehomes.org. They will be able to help you find homes for the animals.

Same thing for you cichlidguy -- when they get too big if you (do not want to or are unable to build them an outdoor environment) just contact turtlehomes they can help you find suitable homes for the animals.

I live in Louisiana so they turtles will have alot of sun and mississippi is just right there(three hours away):P I think this would be better than setting them free. I am experienced with turtles. SO I think they will be goin to a good home just post to confirm this...

How do you even go about shipping turtles? The owner did not care for them properly and I feel bad for them. She said a few of them have shell rot, I'm guessing that's what the white stuff on the shells is. These guys need someone who can care for them properly.

Fed ex ships them and post office should ship them too just go to ur local post office and see how much it cost. Shell rot is common for turtles that arent taken care of properly. Email me at dkluvzck@hotmail.com. Thanks, we can discuss this through email

this should help.....
Go to turtlehomes.org to find instructions. Airborne is the only carrier that knowingly ships turtles. Basically, only ship on a Monday or Tuesday, double box with the turtle in a pillow case in the inner box. Lots of shredded newspaper. Send the box Next Day Express (there by noon the next day). Call 1-800-Airborn to find the closest facility, pick up times, ect. If possible, drop off the package yourself at the office the evening you are shipping. Make sure both boxes are labeled with sender's and receiver's address and phone number. For an inner box you might want a small Gladware type container with moist sphagnum moss for a turtle that small. You want the inner box not much larger than the turtle. Oh, and to the bottom of the outer box I add a sign with BIG letters, "WRONG SIDE. Please Turn Me Over" in colored ink or marker.
