Fighting males

hao Nov 07, 2005 09:43 AM

i need to know at what age do male leopard geckos start fighting each other?? i have 3 juvenile leopard gecko which i think are females. they are kept together for quite some time already.. but recently i notice that they have a bulge at their undersides and they also have the " V " but it isnt very noticeable. they are all eating well and dont seem to fight. are they males or females? i'm really confuse. they are around 5 inches in lenght. i'll be going to australia next week and my cousin is taking over the geckos for awhile. i dont want the geckos to start fighting and killing each other when i'm away.i really hope they are females so i do not need to seperate them. i need help please. thank you!

Well, you definately can't tell from that pic if the pores are visibly, but it definately looks like there may be bulges there. I'm not sure if you've seen good pics of the difference so here is a link to a comparison:

Bludges look like a male. I personaly have not housed males together, except as hatchlings. But I have seen them housed together as adults with no problem. However they were males that have never been around a female. Once they've been with a female they will turn on each other. I personally wouldn't want to risk keeping them together too much longer. Good luck.

Yeah, I have read that males that are kept together from the time they are hatchlings/very young, have done overall pretty well together, AS LONG AS a female is never introduced. The research showed that once either male had been exposed to a female then the normal male to male aggression would kick in. But in some cases even when a female wasn't introduced the aggression did occur as they became adults. Kind of like some females that just won't tolerate another female.

Actually, the last place I read about these type of studies was in the book by Philippe de Vosjoli & Ron Tremper, "The Herpetoculture of Leopard Geckos" which came out this year.

I've actually seen two adult males housed together. They were clutch mates and showed no signs of aggression toward each other.

I posted a question about it here a while ago and I was told that as long as they have never been around a female, they can stay friendly.

I guess that is similar to some kinds of rodents too. I had two male quienea pigs since they were babies and never had a problem with them. But if I had added a female there would have been fighting.
