If I read your post correctly, you stated he was swallowing one prey item, then started to constrict another "LIVE" item with it's tail. If this is what you meant then I must say that is very very very irresponsible on your part to put a live prey item in a cage while your snake is swallowing another item. You must realize if that GP decided to take a bite out of your snake there was no way for your snake to defend itself which could result in a terrible wound or even the death of your snake. In my opinion that is a very horrible husbandry practice and you shouldn't be bragging about endangering your snake. Josh Hutto .......... JKReptiles

I would have to agree with joshhutto. That could cause some series damage to your snake.

there is a difference in being responsible and having bad husbandry practices. responsible entails making sure that the public and yourself have no chance of comming in contact with your animal except in controlled situations. bad husbandry practices is something every keeper has encountered at one time or another. that is why there are these forums so that each keeper can come on here and get advice how to better care for our animals. We all know you are here to start arguments and that is your right, but common get your facts and vocabulary correct before you start trying to flame everyone for keeping a large snake. first off if it were prekilled or ft it would be an awesome pic. however it does show poor husbandry practices to place more than one live prey animal in an encloser. You must realize that keeping large constrictors is a priviledge not a right. it's a priviledge that many people want to ban completely. some of those people come on here to gain fuel to scare the politicians that make these choices for us. when someone puts pics of thier snake eating a cute fuzzy rabbit, yes it's nature but the return comment from these people is "This could be your child" . now when another person posts a pic of a snake killing 2 items at once that endangers the snake in any way they say this " See this person doesn't care about his snake, and if that snake ever got out it could kill 2 people at once" . You must realize those type of people are out there and think about all pics you post and re-evaluate your husbandry practises. I myself used to take my 18ft tiger retic on rides through town until i realized that if people know you have it, then they want to ban it. Josh Hutto....JKReptiles

interestingly, most constricting snakes are well adapted to taking multiple prey and constricting them to death simultaneously in order to eat. In the distant past- mid 1970s- i had a large walk in cage with multiple large boids. It was not unusual (pre husbandry reccs) to throw in a rat toward each snake. Some rats would scamper away and be taken by an animal already constricting a rat with its head/neck. I had one african rock take on three rats at one time. It makes sense if a snake accessed a rodent burrow in the wild. They can envelop and constrict, tail wrap and/or push a prey item up against the wall of a burrow and smother it with just the pressure of the coil.

Ain't nature amazing!

in fact, a snake is much more likely to suffer a fatal bite from live prey if bitten on the head/eye/innner mouth etc. as opposed to a coil or the tail.

all education is expensive, the higher the tuition, the more important the lesson learned... if we took notice that it was a lesson ih the first place.

thanks for the support
i thought i was the only one that thought it was cool

I have a Tiger thats done that with 2 rabbits before. It really is a cool picture of a finely tuned predator. I sure would like to hear from someone that has had a feeder G pig attack a snake. Sure they "can" bite, but every G pig i've ever seen was much more concerned with being scared. Unlike ball pythons, retics are not so quickly overwhelmed by their prey
