formula ffor pruducing blazing blizzards

kurma Jul 22, 2003 10:21 AM

Ok so this should be able to be donw in detail and pretty accurate right? I'm i know it may not turn out that way if I tried but can some one break it out to. Such as just examples If I breed a albino to a blizzard then I get double hets and then I breed them together why is it only a 1 in 2000 chance? It doesn't seem to make since mathematically to me? Please
clarify

No one really knows. There are obviously some genetic factors we don't yet understand and since there aren't really any genetiscists (sp?) working with leopard geckos it may be a while before we find out.

Hey,

In theory, when two double hets are bred together the ratio for producing a homozygous animal that is expressing both traits should be 1:16... But with the blazing blizzards and the Tremper Patternless albinos theory has no grounds whatsoever... I dont really think anyone knows why its so hard to get a blazing blizzard hatched out, but it has to do something with the compatability of the two recessive genes. So yeah 1:2000 or even 1:1000 is the current ration of blazing blizzard to other offspring... I've heard both ratios... Hope this helped maybe someone will be able to explain it in more detail, but I think you'll get the point...

Why tremper Albinos? Why not rainwater, las vegas, ect
or for that mater what about line bred like tang albino

Hi,

I believe people are using the rainwaters (aka las vegas) for the blazings as well (just dont think they've had any luck with producing the blazings from Vegas albinos)... I know for a fact that there are lots of breeders that've had LV patternless albinos so the 1:16 ratio for them seems a bit more stable... I could be wrong but I think the rainwaters and patternless genes seem to be more compatible. As far as the line bred part, well you use line breeding for the color mutations (tangerine, jungle, pastels, stripes), and not the genetic mutations (albinism, blizzards, patternless, bananas and so on)... Genetic mutations might not be the right word here, but I couldnt think of another way to put it... Hope this helped...

I'm no geneticist... but its kind of a tricky thing with recessive genes... Albinism...in its wild state is a genetic flaw.. a mutation in a normal population.. just as being leucistic is.. (which Blizzard's may or may not be...I've heard varying opinions on that one) However.. when you combine 2 recessive genes to try to produce an animal expressing both.. alot of the time it comes with genetic weaknesses that make the continued viability of that animal compromised. We breed them for the colors because they're attractive.. in the wild its considered a flaw to be weeded out of the gene pool... Not to mention, alot of albino's and blizzards have been either line bred back to their sires or dams.. or have been inbred to their siblings to help strengthen the albino gene.. and as wel all know, that causes alot of genetic instability as well.. So combining the two isn't your straight theory of genetics...you have to deal with alot of other factors that may have been thrown into the mix during the successive generations before your animals were produced.
