Frog herping help

DeZ Jul 22, 2003 10:23 AM

Hi I would like advice on how I can be successful on my frog herping trips to my surrounding areas. I'm staying in Asia where Malayan Horned frog can be found, and I'm currently doing a private research, documentation and breeding of endangered frog population. Hence I would like to know what are the successful ways of "trapping" or find frogs, be it treefrogs or toads. What are the equipment I need etc...

Normally I would "armed" myself with a few plastic containers and a few fish nets to "trap" whatever reptiles or amphibians I can find, as well as to fish out tadpoles from streams, ponds or puddles... I've successfully raised most of the tadpoles to adulthood, but I would really like to find adult treefrogs or toads... pls advice.

Some frogs/toads are difficult to find outside of their limited breeding season. This is true even in lush areas like mesic tropical forests.

One trick is to make sure you are active when the frogs are. Rainy nights or evenings after very rainy days are good.

Knowing the calls of local species or investigating areas where you hear possible frogs calling can lead you to adults.

Anurans can also be found on quiet roads near breeding ponds on wet nights.
