Frog Herping Help

DeZ Jul 22, 2003 10:28 AM

Hi I would like advice on how I can be successful on my frog herping trips to my surrounding areas. I'm staying in Asia where Malayan Horned frog can be found, and I'm currently doing a private research, documentation and breeding of endangered frog population. Hence I would like to know what are the successful ways of "trapping" or find frogs, be it treefrogs or toads. What are the equipment I need etc...

Normally I would "armed" myself with a few plastic containers and a few fish nets to "trap" whatever reptiles or amphibians I can find, as well as to fish out tadpoles from streams, ponds or puddles... I've successfully raised most of the tadpoles to adulthood, but I would really like to find adult treefrogs or toads... pls advice.

Research is worthless without knowing the literature. Knowing the literature will also tell you what trapping techniques will work in any given circumstance. I highly recommend getting a subscription to Herpetological Review, a journal that you get when you are a member of the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles. This journal has a lot of trapping techniques published in it.

In most cases, researchers use drift fences and pitfall traps to capture certain target species of reptiles and amphibians. You can also use PVC pipe to locate tree frogs, as they will crawl into them in use them for refugia. along the same lines, you can also accused artificial cover objects that mimic walks and other ground debris, but you use a standardized objects for scientific validation.

Remember, know your literature, start reading!
