soft-shell and RES compatible?

WildBill Nov 07, 2005 10:09 PM

Thinking about getting a soft-shell. Would I be able to keep it with my RES (as long as their the same size)?

Simple answer is no. Softshells should be kept by themselves to avoid damage to their carapace. Also softshells can be quite aggressive. I once had a large female Florida softshell and tried to introduce a smaller male to her tank. Next day the male was a very dead animal.

Male RES (assumed to be a mild-mannered slider) are also VERY aggresive. The leading turtle owner in America will not keep any Trachemys for this reason, and I have bad personal experience here. My immediate response is "NO". Softshells are also aggresive and I usually keep them isolated.

not to mention that they also have different requirements.

who pray tell, is the leading turtle owner in America

I'm not, but I see them in the same habitat in the wild in Corpus Christi, Texas. That doesn't mean they will make good playmates! I would keep 'em separated!

Although a Califonia dude may exceed him in volume, no one beats Bill McCord for number of species and, incidendally, for his elaborate breeding facilities for endangered Asian species.

LOL!! I thought McCord was the answer.

Is this the same Bill McCord who was involved in the controversy over erroneously describing a number of new asian species of turtle?

erico Nov 21, 2005 10:45 PM

Short answer , yes, but it was unintentional. Can't remeber the details exactly, but after the original articles in the 80's, previous descriptions were found and Cuora pani becam C. aurocapitata, giving the name pani to the recently described chriskarannarum (combined name of his wife and daughter) in precedence on review of the literature. Cuora mccordi still stands, however, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong. There is one person who rarely reads the forum anymore, but who is an expert on this. Bill has an extraordinary facility for breeding endangered Asian species.
