need some advice...

GrYmLyN Jul 22, 2003 10:38 AM

i am a new owner of a baby veiled chameleon, everything was going fine until hurricane claudette hit south tx and made a mess out of everything. my chameleon's terrarium was knocked over due to the hurricane and now she appears to have broken her back left leg. i have kept a close eye on her the past week and she appears to be fine other than that back leg. and that could be part of the problem, she moves about her surroundings like normal. i've been a reptile hobbyist for a few years now and i know how deadly an accident like this can be, especially to a hatchling. so my question is what, if any advice anyone has that could help me assist in her healing.

to contact me either reply to this post, or contact me on Ypager: Flaming_Furbyskull
i'm going to be online and at my house for atleast a couple more hours before leaving to go anywhere.

Fractures can certainly heal well by themselves. Chams can suffer undetected fractures from MBD without much sign. I would suggest getting an xray to see if there is major displacement of the bone and to see if the bones look thin from early MBD. A real baby may not have totally calcified bone yet. You may not have to splint anything and maybe that is best. Then if she can get around OK just get her in good lighting (sounds like she's outdoors?) and feed her really carefully for a good heal. For good advice on nutrition I'd suggest reading the articles on www.adcham.com and www.herpnutrition.com for supplement and gutload ideas. Hope she's OK.

i have her inside, what happened was the hurricane busted off a large branch near my room and it hit the outside of my room which in turn shoved over the dresser i had her terrarium sitting on. the back leg is broken i can tell, and yes she is just a baby, maybe 4 inches long including tail, if that big.
you mentioned her bones not being calcified yet, if this is the case, the leg will probably need to be splinted eh? she is in fine health, it was the fall that caused her leg to break, and it sucks how young she is and this happening.
gonna just leave her alone and see if it mends by itself, if i havent seen any improvement in the next week i plan on speaking to a vet on it.
