Diagnosing infertile eggs

slimdogg Nov 08, 2005 12:36 PM

I have a pair of ebenaui that came in in a Jan. shipment. In the last 3 months I have gotten a pair of infertile eggs each month. My question is is there obvious reasons why eggs are infertile by initial appearance, feel, etc. The eggs i have been getting are laid on the ground, not rolled. They are good circluar eggs, but very soft with no hard shell at all. Could this be a sign of more calcium needed in the diet? or male just not doing his job?One of my six eggs was your typical runny infertile stuck to the glass, any typical causes of an infertile like that? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

my guess would be a combination of not enough calcium and vit d3. i had a hard time with ebans , so i am no expert, but i think that if you were to put on a bulb with 5.0 uvb you might get fertile eggs. My linniatus i have only had for 4 months but i did not really notice breeding activity until i put a uv bulb on their tank. using a good calcium powder also helps. One other thing, do you think that your animals might br to young? i have a pair of phants from the order before that, and they just started laying inferts because they were to young to start breeding. good luck and keep us posted.

I already dust with repcal/herptivite every other feeding . Right now the tank is on my dart frog rack being lit by two 32 watt t8 6500k bulbs from home depot for plant growth, i may try replacing one with a uv bulb.As for age, in the 11 months I've had the pair they haven't grown a ton, practically full grown when they came in. They should be sexually mature. I'm just trying to figure out if there are certain causes relating to "types" of infertile eggs.
