mealworm question......

flammysnake Nov 08, 2005 02:34 PM

I've had my mealworms sitting out for a while (my roommates don't like them in the fridge) and now they've hit that in between mealworm and beetle stage. You know when they're white and really gross looking? Yeah like that. Are those ok to feed?

Okay, your mealworms are pupating. Why feed them off? Why not let them finish up their metamorphisis to become beetles, and lay eggs for you?
You're not opposed to FREE mealworms, are ya? I started off with about 500 mealworms earlier this year that I forgot about in the closet- I now have over 10000 mealworms, with more morphing everyday.

Plus, the beetles are a nice, crunchy alternative for your animals.
They usually go nuts over these things, as they're so used to soft
crickets and larvae. They have a bit of a chemical defense, but
I've yet to see a chameleon turn one down.

Superworm beetles will be spat out unless you wash the thing's
rear off with water rpior to feeding.

A simple mealworm colony is very useful, and very maintanence
free. a good backup for food, especiall for little ones.

The thought had originally crossed my mind, but I figured since there were so few changing, that it wouldn't be worth it. What would I need to do? Just leave them in the container and let'em at it?

JUST LET THEM GO. THEY ARE THE EASIEST TO BREED AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT YOU WILL HAVE HUNDREDS. I USE OATMEAL.WHEAT GERM AND BARN FOR BEDDING AND GIVE THEM GREENS AND CARROTTS. THEY LOVE IT.

The beetles only have two things to live for.

1. QUENCH THEIR THIRST
2. LAY EGGS

They are thirsty buggers. So put in fresh vegitables, BUT not "wet" ones. Carrotts are great - but whatever you use you need to watch your Bran doesn't mold, because it can, quite easily.
