Heat Cord from Big Apple and Rack questions?

yellowconda12 Nov 08, 2005 04:37 PM

I am thinking of building a rack system for my snakes. I have seen this 30 foot heat cord at big apple, and in an old reptile book it shows how to heat a rack system by taking heat cord and winding it back and forth accross the back of the bin containers, is this sufficient as belly heat and general heating? If it was located in the very back of the containers would it heat the bottom? Do you have to have belly heat for proper digestion? Or can overall heating of appropriate temperature make it so digestion isn't a factor?
Please any help appreciated,..

I say use heat tape. I have used it many times and am VERY happy with it.

I agree with you Ben I use flexwatt heat tape in my reptile room at the store and on my BP's rack system and I think it is the way to go. I would recomend you use a good themostat with it instead of a dimmer switch. I found out the hard way that dimmers are not reliable luckily it only cracked some glass tanks and didnt harm any animals but it did melt the heat tape. I use a helix thermostat and it works great.

I don't have a rack system but I understand heat tape is cheap. Could you use it on a regular cage? Could I get it at a hard war store? Thanks for reading.

I can't remember where exactly I got it I shopped the web for best price but here is a link to the same tape I am talking about. I would use 3 or 4 inch tape unless the are is really large.

The stuff works great, just make sure you buy enough and have a thermostat. I had built a small rack with 12 feet of rope and had to buy more. Hope that helps.
