SIze comparison of V. melinus please?

waspinator421 Nov 08, 2005 06:38 PM

Hello all, me again! I am still trying to learn as much as I can about Yellow Monitors (V. melinus) before I get one. I am wondering if anyone has a pic they can show me of an adult Yellow Monitor being held by a person? I know they grow up to 4-5 ft, but I really need a picture to get a good idea how big that really is (body bulk vs. tail length, etc.) Thanks everyone! You've been very helpful with all my questions so far!

Hi,
I have a 8x10 color photo of a V. melinus approaching the 6 foot total length size....it was one of the very first ones captured and consequently photographed.

As for an article about them, there are a few in German, including its original description which gives locality as Obi, which is wrong - and there is my (english) article in Vivarium, June/July, 10(4):38-40 that has the majority of the info about it written/published = there is an updated segment on V. melinus in the book, "Varanoid Lizards of the World" (2005) edited by Eric Pianka, (late) Dennis King and (widow) Ruth King....

Good hunting,
markb
