Tips on Diamondback terrapin

Sarah_Spencer Nov 08, 2005 08:11 PM

I'm a senior at DHS & I'm a teacher's aid for a teacher that knows someone involved in the headstart program for diamondback terrapin at our local zoo, so I'll be helping with alot of the care of a few of these little guys...basically we'll be raising them over the winter and release them sometime in fall...I was just wondering if anybody had any tips on care for small hatchlings, like how big of a tank sure we have for 2 or 3 hatchlings and what kinds of food should I offer them. Thanks

Hi Sara,
You can keep hatchlings in a simple 10 or 20 gallon tank with say 3 inches of water or even deeper water as long as you provide lot of plants and stuff that they can hang on to and rest.

They will eat dried shrimp, pellets, red worms and small snails. Be careful not to overfeed.

Keep the water clean, change water every other day if you can, to avoid fungal infections.

Good luck.

Michael
