Question about dead roaches as feeders

froggieb Nov 09, 2005 01:01 PM

I offered my orange head roach colony to some club members in a neighboring state. I would have to ship about 200 roaches and it would take 2-3 days. I feel a heat pack would be required this time of year in order for them to arrive alive. On of the people who have requested the roaches for the cost of shipping as requested no heat pack, as she doesn't care if they arrive dead. She plans to freeze them and feed them to her turtles.

Now, I have received dead shipments of roaches and personally I don't think I would consider them fit to feed to anything. What does everyone here think? If they reach her alive and she freezes them I have not problem with that, but DOA then freeze and feed doesn't sound to healthy to me!

Should I tell her no dice?

If your roaches are fat and healthy, and then die from cooling, then they should still retain most of their nutritional value and should benefit their turtles.

K, now I know these are just roaches, and I'm not all to attached to them either, but should we consider the humanity of death by freezing? It's been proven painfull in reptiles and other vertebrates, should we extend this to invertebrates?

I don't know, do you worry about that when you spray your foundation with raid?

Sorry, couldn't resist that one!

Call me a tree hugger, but I avoid killing bugs when I have too, havn't used raid in the longest time...

Now when they bite you, then it's personal... die mosquito!
