Baby Jacksons 2 Weeks and a Day!

vegasbilly Nov 09, 2005 07:17 PM

So far so good! Chowing on crickets and fruit flies. Getting 45 minutes of mornng sun 3-4 days a week, misted twice daily. These little pigs literally run (for a Cham - lol) over each other to eat. All you see is a bunch of tiny tongues shooting out from the cover and you hear a lot of little "zap" noises as they chow. I'm mesmerized by these little gems!

She's doin' well. I had them all out in the sun this AM and put the male near her just for grins. She turned "angry cammo" in coloration (black and dark green), started swaying rapidly back and forth, and was gaping at him like crazy!

He evidently got the message of this "subtle" body language...he didn't move an inch!

Very cool! I'm glad to hear that she is doing well! And I don't blame her for gaping one bit, sounds like she has her mits full!
You know I keep having this dream where I have a cage full of different lizards, and I've been neglecting it or forgot about it or something, anyway, I go the check on it and I have a cage full of babies, I mean like a ton of them, then I go into panic mode and start to spray them with a water bottle. Then I wake up. Weird huh?

Wow, too weird! I have a similar dream (recurring) wherein I have forgotten to feed WHOLE room of snakes for like months! Then I rush in only to find them hungry but otherwise just fine!

I'd like to lay this one on Freud, wonder what he'd make of it?? LOL

It's too weird if you ask me. I'm thinking my male veiled Stitch is sending me late night vibes, saying I need a girlfriend, I need to procreate........ Did you forget I'm a man with needs..............
I can't explain it any other way

Hey,

I am happy to hear you are having good luck with your babies. It could have gone much, much worse. You did very, very well!!! Keep up the good work, and keep us posted. Have a great day!!!

Wow, thanks for the great compliment! My job dictates I travel usually 2 nights/3 days a week minimum. I've been told by more than one admired herper that the successes I've had over the years can be attributed to my not being around to "mess" with them! That speaks volumes to me, possibly we do too much for our herps?? I know if I'm around, I'll "think" of a milion little things I "need" to do w/my collection. Mabey less is more?

I firmly believe stress is a slow killer! I NEVER hold any of my herps unless absolutely necessary (cleaning, etc.) and I keep my intrusions to the utmost minimum. Just 'cause a herp doesn't react w/a hiss or bite doesn't mean it's not stressin' inside.

Hey,

I strongly believe with what you are saying. I also believe that just a cham seeing you will stress him out. The must see us as predators to an extent, so when we hold them, forget about it!!!!

I also believe that the more you watch and study an individual specimen, the more likely chance of you just "having a sense" that something is going to go wrong. You will know the chameleon better. Not to mention, that there is a better chance of seeing him/her with his eyes closed, on the bottom of the cage, dehydrated, ect. sooner, so that you can do the necessary procedure to help him faster.

It is really all a matter of opinion. I lean to believe the second one better, that the more you watch a specimen, the more chance of catching something wrong. It works out better for me anyway.

But, good luck. Stay with it.

I agree with you completely. Observing, taking mental notes, etc. is one thing... handling, tinkering w/the cage, readjusting things just for the heck of it, etc., THESE are the things I try and avoid.

Its not always possible not to intervene but sometimes I've found that the more I study the more concerned I become..when there wasn't anything to be concerned with in the first place! Does this make any sense?

Of course, the largest % of my collection consists of Boids and Pythons which require much less interaction and are far more forgiving when mistakes are made. Still, if the basic care requirements are known and met I try to maintain confidence in this and try to leave well enough alone.
