Hi, I would like to know if anyone knows how to sex corn snakes without probing them? Thanks for all replys!
Unless your really use to seeing them, or they are still babies(poping the hemi penis out) adult or sub adults should be probed.
Males ussally are thicker after the vent to house the HP and females get smaller after the vent.
Does anyone know how kingsnake picks what is a hot topic? Sometimes it has about a million responses and sometimes it's just a basic question with one response much like this one. Just curious.
There are three ways to determine the gender of a cornsnake.
1. popping- this is manually inverting the hemipenis of hatchlings. Since hatchlings don't have the muscle strength to hold them in yet, you can pop them out if you know how to do it. By doing this you can visually either see the hemipenis or the anal gland of a female.
2. probing- inserting a proble into the vent opening towards the tail. The probe goes a few scales deeper on males, since it's actually going into the inverted hemipenis.
3. comparing the tails- this works best if you have several the same size to compare. The males usually have longer tails used to help position themselves correctly during breeding. And looking at the shape of the tail, like the above post mentioned. On a male, just below the vent, the snake will be thicker due to the hemipenis housed inside, and then sharply narrow down just below where the hemipenis ends. The female will smoothly taper down from the vent without the bulge.
CAUTION: Both probing and popping should be done by someone with experience because of the risk of injury if done improperly.
