For all you brooksi wackers!

A.C. Nov 09, 2005 08:59 PM

Here are pics of 2 brooksi I collected as DOR'S this past March. I missed them both by about 15-30 minutes as I was actively hunting the road they were found on. They were found sometime between 10-11 pm. I will not give the exact locale, but i will tell you they were found within the Everglades and within 50 miles of the southernmost tip of FL. Don't get any "purer" than these.

1 adult and 1 juvi

here is the adult's dorsal

What an absolute shame, but at the same time that is great to know snakes like that are still out there! Great info and pics.

How very sad... They're such beautiful snakes...

S.Florida Lt.phase kingsnake really looked like.

bluerosy Nov 10, 2005 08:42 AM

Thanks for the pics. It is interesting how some of those S. florida locales look as dark as other Florida locales. Though I find the juvi black and white one interesting. To bad we will never know how that one would have turned out.

A.C. Nov 11, 2005 08:42 AM

yes,I too was eager to see what these guys looked like down there. I stayed there for a week, and trust me, there is nothing to do there but herp and fish, so we put our time in. These are the only two that turned up. Artificial cover does not exist in that area!

Do you have any pics of the habitat?

Thanks again for the pics of the snakes!

A.C. Nov 12, 2005 05:14 PM

not on the computer...I can tell you that the habitat was all water logged with lots of grass. Small percentage of shrubbery and very few trees. It was open pretty much. Very wet environmemt. We found really no upland spp in this spot. The most common snakes were waters and cottonmouths.

Is it legal to collect in Everglades NP? Just curious. Ken.

neither dead nor alive.

I talked with some park staff and they said no live animals could be taken including burmese pythons! lol They said to leave em be and contact park staff after sighting. We didn't end up seeing any, but it would have been real cool!
