Quick question for breeders.

I recently was looking in the classifieds, just checking the prices for some baby balls. I keep finding anything but, what I see are yearlings and big 05 BP's. I wanted to know when will be the month that hatchlings start showing up a lot on the classifieds here on ks? I want to see some nice hatchlings in the ball park of 60 grams or so. That weight would better accomodate the small setup I currently have. All I see are some that look well into the hundreds (grams) and they are only 05's.

Most of our balls weigh more then 60g when they hatch. Then by the time you get 5 or 6 meals in them before shipping they weigh close to 100g.

Most of mine were over 60 when they hatched - by the time they had a few meals in them and were good to ship they were over 100 grams. What kind of set up do you have - balls don't stay really small for very long - maybe you should try a smaller species.

I have a 16 qt sweater box, is that to small??? Most people told me it would be ideal for a baby ball.... I might have to pick up a ten gallon aquarium if there to small. The ten gallon aqaurium is only 13 bucks. Should I just get that? I find them to big and harder to clean, and I had some containers laying around so I was gonna use them. When should I expect hatchlings bp's on the ks classifieds? I was thinking april?

All my hatchlings are at least 100 grams before I sell them, minimum. Below that isn't very healthy. Hell, most of mine are over 80 grams right out of the egg!!!!!

60 grams sounds like wild caught, and you'll end up spending a couple hundred dollars on vet bills, if you even take it to one.

Get a bigger rubbermaid that's around 10 gallons, then you'll have a few months after you get it to find a better permanant home. I wouldn't use something that's laying around the house.

Yes, April-June should be the big influx of hatchlings..... so you have a while to find a suitable enclosure for it.

I got my very first BP ever exactly one year ago. Since then, I have acquired a total of 24 yearling female normals (no males yet, but soon!) I am learning the species with them (and growing them up!) before spending relatively big money on male morphs.

Here is what worked for me when I decided to get my first BP.

The first thing I did was to read this interesting article right here on the forum: http://www.kingsnake.com/ballpythonguide/index.html

Then I started lurking on the forum for awhile, while reading a couple of books on them. I have learned quite a bit this past year, but since I haven't really had any problems with mine, I don't generally respond to questions specifically about BPs. However, I do get a chance to sometimes respond to more general questions about shipping, etc.

Although I still don't feel qualified to say much about BPs, I can say that I started my yearlings in my 28 qt. Rubbermaids that I use for adult corns. Now the largest are starting to look a little crowded, so I only have a few more months before securing larger quarters for most of them. So I wouldn't want to plan on small cages for very long, lol!

Good luck!

Well isn't that interesting...the Love's getting into the ball world. Should make things interesting haha. Keeping it under wraps for now I assume? This is something I doubt Gino would have forgot to mention to me if he had known

60g is fresh out of the egg, some CBB come out of the egg at 90 - 100g. So looking for a 60g baby is going to be hard as most good breeders will not sell their babies until they have eaten at leat a few meals wich can easily bump them over 100g.

I actually just took weights 5 days ago, so I can tell you they don't stay small very long. I have 2 early 05 females...don't have an exact hatch date, but around 4/05. They are both over 300g (303 and 304 to be exact). I also have 2 het alb.s that are at 181g and 123g, hatch date 8/7/05. I have the hets in 16qt rubbermaids (the shoe-box size) and the 181g barely fits. So I say the cutoff for those boxes is about 200g. My others are in sweaterboxes, and those should them to close to 100g. After that...you gotta figure out whats best for you.

As for getting actually neonates...your best bet is gonna be spring.
