Bullfrog question

danielle4girls4 Nov 09, 2005 11:55 PM

My fiance and I have a bullfrog we've had since he was a tadpole. He is in a 55 gallon tank w/ both land and water. He is always in the water. My question is, my fiance wants to put real leaves in the tank to float on the water . Is that safe to do? The frog likes to hide under things and we want ot give him more hiding places. Also, we have had him for over a year and we have never heard him make a sound. Is that weird? Thanks in advance, Danielle

no sounds could mean its a female, thats how it is with many other frogs. floating pond plants would be a great idea, cover to make her feel more comfortable. just remember that many plants need some high quality lights, probably not what you are used to or have for the frog already. im not sure which plants would be okay in low light, you will have to wait for someone else to answer or check a pond or pond plant book. if anything it will help the water quality. good luck.

Dear ma'am,

Floating plants will in no way endanger your froglet/frog. It's give him more space to hide. You can always find either wild floating plants in ponds and lakes, or see if you can get some at plant shops(Make sure these are safe from chemicals.)

Best bet is that you find these hyacinths or another plant that is really neat for bullfrogs, the name of which I can't recall. They both float, are abundant in the Southern U.S. The latter will grow under flourescent lights.

Otherwise, stick with fack plants for now. As for it not croaking, it IS probably a female. They only make squeaky kinds of sounds, needs a male to get her active, some background noise like crickets and other frogs chirping in the summer, so depending on where you live, open the window on warm days.

To keep your frog well, make sure it has a heater, don't feed too many goldfish; give it a calcium powder and don't provide too hot of a basking light.
