where to purchase?

krich Nov 10, 2005 03:53 AM

ok, I have heard alot about the pros and cons of buying from a pet store versus private breader. I don't know of any shows in my area or any breaders near me. If anyone knows of one please let me know. Also is it better to get a young corn? plus what does it mean when you put those numbers in frount of your pets? Told you I had alot of questions

Need to know your location for suggestions. All pet stores are not bad. I would suggest looking for a a good corn snake book first like Kathy Love's Cornsnake Manual. You can find it in just about any pet store or order it online. The numbers indicate male.female ratio. 1.1 corns would be 1 male, 1 female. 2.4 would be 2 males, 4 females.
Where ever you decide to buy from, make sure you are getting a healthy animal. Dont trust the pet store owner or breeder to sell you a healthy animal. Unfortunately there are crooked people in this hobby. Read up on them first, then decide where to buy.

the number represent how many and what sex you have of each animal, the first number is for males, the second number is for females, the last number is for "unknown" or unsexed....
0.1.0 normal corn
1.0.0 miami phase corn
1.0.0 ball python
2.4.24 rats
0.1.0 chow chow
0.2.0 cats
1.2.0 ferrets
0.2.0 guinea pigs
1.0.0 sugar glider
0.2.6 tarantulas
0.0.2 turtles

A reptile show will be where you'll be able to get a corn for the least amount of money; pet stores usually double the direct-from-breeder price to cover their overhead.

If you don't live in a city where they have shows, most breeders can ship to your door.

You have to figure the entrance fee to the reptile show (yes, they charge) into your costs, but STILL it's a great deal. You ought to be able to get a quality corn for $30 or less. If RodentPro is going to be there (like the Dec 4th show in St. Louis), bring a little Igloo cooler with some dry ice and buy yourself some pinkies. Then food-save them if you can (takes the air out of the bag and it lasts longer.

Good luck,

Walt

There are several breeders listed towards the top of the main corn snake forum page such as kathy Love (Cornutopia), John Cherry (Cherryville Farms), and Don Soderberg (South Mountain Reptiles) and a few others. Any of these breeders can and will ship and have great animals.

all you breeders have congregated up that way...... i think a few of you should move down south...

Pastorpat Nov 10, 2005 09:25 PM

Seven of the best are in the South: Don Soderberg, John Cherry, Don Shores, Jim Sargeant and Tom Stevens are in Texas. Kathy Love and the one who can't be named (e-mail me) are in Florida. Jason Nelson (Envy Reptiles) is in Utah, Ronda Van Winkle is in Washington (NW Herps)and Gregg Feaster has his basement in Penn. There are many, many others. Those I have named are people I have dealt with and trust implicitly. Oh, almost forgot-the other ragin' cajun, KJ, who posts here often. Go to these folks and you'll get the best stock, the best advice and the most honest service. They are all top notch!!!
