First run with Aspen

Kiknskreem Nov 10, 2005 08:54 PM

Hello all, just switched some of my tanks over to aspen and I must say I'm quite pleased. I've used paper towels for years, finally got my own place, and decided to upgrade my snake homes as well. Switched 'em to repti-bark, nice looking, but what a pain in the ass to keep up! It held smell when they went, and got moldy if any water spilled on it. So far the aspen is easier to clean, and much cheaper. Just my unsolicited 2 cents.

I was thinking about making the big switch to aspen but was cautious. I used paper towels which were fine but looked annoying (flower patterns), Then I tried dessert blend (crushed english walnuts) and found it very smelly and dusty plus it gets your whole room messy when you try and spot clean. Then naturbark which I thought was safe and looked natural but the oder of it was just as bad as cedder and almost made me puke, think what it was doing to the snake, I hate fir trees now... Now Newspaper does have that weird newspapery smell to it though lol but I love aspen and if breeders who've been doing this for 20 years say aspen is fine then it is. Just bought me a pack today, and I'm very happy, last stop on the substrate train for me.
