What's going on in the classifieds?

Peace_Frog Nov 11, 2005 01:37 PM

I've been breeding cresteds for 2 years or so, but have been using kingsnake's classifieds to sell my babies for less than 1 year. I posted an ad 2 weeks ago or so and have had no bites at all on it. The last time I posted was over 6 months ago (I moved during that in between time), but the last time I posted some cresteds they sold within a week. What's going on in the classifieds? Is it something about this time of year that maybe everyone is selling and no one is buying? Is there no demand for cresteds anymore? Anyone else experiencing this too or is it just me? Any ideas or info at all would be greatly appreciated.

the market is slowly but surely being saturated with people breeding crested geckos, and wanting to get a price exactly what they paid for their original breeders. this just isn't going to happen.
drop your prices, and sell exceptional animals and you will sell every last one.
let's say you pay 300 dollars for a very nice crested, if you sell the offspring for 150-200 dollars, you're much more likely to get rid of them much quicker than if you're trying to either A) sell them for more than what a similar animal would sell for
or B) just an average price, but nobody needs them at the time.

looking at your ad, i would say it is a very fair/reasonable price to ask for the gecko in the ad. however getting closer to winter, and seeing as how most of the major reptile shows just occurred within the past 2 months, people just aren't looking for more animals at the time.

i think people are also hesitant about buying unsexed cresteds. personally, i don't need anymore males, so i'm not willing to take the chance on unsexed juvies (i have enough of those from my breeders). females are always of use to me, but most females tend to be held back for breeding.

i would definitely have to agree with you on that one. but i've also found that young/adult males are very easy to sell for 40-90 dollars a piece at shows, for younger children that need something that is more hardy, and easier to start off with than a juvie or a baby, so as long as you're not selling them for less than what you bought them for then it would be okay i guess.

I agree with flamed. Shows are really the way to go when selling adult males. I usually do a show every month and adult/sub-adult males are some of my best sellers. I always have excess males. I have been selling them for $45 up to $95 for my really nice red males. For example, I had a small show last wekend and sold like 8+ males. You will also have more success if you post GOOD pics of the parents.
