New snake mommy to be and need some advice

missdeth Nov 11, 2005 10:58 PM

Hey everyone!

So I've been researching snakes for awhile and have finally hunkered down and selected a Mexican x California from my local reptile shop: Pet Bazaar. He's a little baby, about 2 months old, and I'll be bringing him home next week. Of course, I've been pouring over various sites, trying to garner opinions and hints on how best to care for and house my new guy. Unfortunately, I keep coming up with very contradictory reports! Which is to be expected, since everyone does things a little differently. But I did have some major concerns about heating and lighting elemants, as well as the size of cage I should initially purchase.

I was planning on getting a 20 breeder, but have read some places that too big of a tank for a baby snake could be stressful. Has anyone had this problem?

Also, the managers at Pet Bazaar said to stay away from heating strips and the like, stick with lights. But everywhere I've read, people use the under the tank heating strips. And if I do go the light route, what is a good wattage to go for? And do I need to invest in a UV bulb as well (we use mercury vapor ones for our beardie and red eared slider).

I'm sure these are the simpliest questions to answer, but I just can't find any three sites that can be consistant with this info! So thanks everyone, I appreciate any info you can provide.

UTH is fine. ANYTHING that creates a heat gradient (accept for fire ) You also shouldn't need the UV bulb. VERY few snakes need them.
