New to kings

Hi all, I just got my very first kingsnake.. A very pretty Milksnake phase thayer's king..

This is a total impulse buy..and guess I could use a few pointers.. How big is this snake going to get?? Does this species do better in big tanks or small tanks...do they have "territories"?? Does it matter if I feed snake in day or night?? I feed all my snakes on same day if I can.

Is there any good websites, books, care sheets on this species?? .. If not, what king can I compare the care to??

While I am new to kingsnakes, I kept corns, gophers and rubber boas for years. I do know most of the king rules.. although the breeder told me he keeps a trio in together at all times and that this species does not eat snakes..IF.. fed mice from day one.. not sure how true that is..

Was wondering how I can setup a NATURAL looking enclosure for him?? I know the care stats and know it is easier just to keep tank simple, but I would like to make this snake's enclosure a centerpiece in my livingroom..

hope to learn alot on this forum.

chat back soon,

harpy

Hello Sallie. Welcome to the board, and to the lovely world of Thayeri. I've only been into them for about a year now so I'm sure alot of the more experienced guys on here could answer technical questions, but as for the general keeping of them I have found that keeping them from 78-83 seems perfect.I keep most of mine in plastic totes 3ft L, 2 ft wide, and 6 inches high. As far as setting up a display tank I wouldn't put too much stuff in there. More stuff for bacteria to grow on, and more stuff to clean. I would use aspen bedding. I have tried other things, but I always come back to aspen. I hoped this helped. Post some pics if you can. Take care.
Ken
