help, sick fence lizard

mricy23 Jul 22, 2003 02:43 PM

hi, i've had my fence lizard for about 3 years now, and he is starting to get a bulge in his tail, and he's having troubling excreting feces. also, i've noticed lately that his right eye is swollen. he will sit there and it will look kind of like a cartoon, because his eyes will fill up with air and puff out, sometimes he opens his mouth for a second when he's doing this. his eyes will go back to normal, but now his right eye is larger than normal, making his eye look sunken. what should i do, he is in a 30 gallon tank w/ calcitrate sand or whatever that stuff is. there is UV full spectrum lighting and an incandescent bulb for heat. What should i do about these aliments, there are no vets able to treat lizards in my area. please help.

Well I was going to say to take him to a vet untill you said there are none in your area. Posably you can find one in an outlieing area and take him in. If not at least pony up the cash for a long distance phone call and talke to a qualified profesional. I had one years ago that would bulge out its eyes like that but nothing ever came of it.

I once saw a Western Fence Lizard squeeze a piece of sand out of its eye. It was so strange, since their eyes are almost as small as grains of sand. You should take some pics and post them on the 'net and as a vet to look at them there.
