Sunsets, Hypo Hoggs, and Prices Oh My???

DavidKendrick Nov 12, 2005 01:00 PM

I was just curious about Sunsets, I have seen some very beautiful ones produced, and so far from what I understand, that Sunsets are what is produced from breeding 2 hypo hoggs together, right? its basicly a Super Hypo Hogg? What I was wondering is why there prices are up in the $3,000-$5,000 range, and the Hypo Hoggs, are in the $500-$600 range? Back when the normal hypos and super hypos where big, there wasn't that much of a price difference. Just curious what people thought, my intention was not to start a war, I was just curious, the hypo hoggs seem to be priced at a reasonable price, almost what nice hypos go for, but the sunsets are just the super form right?

it is because not every pairing will result in "Sunset," even though you will produce supers?? Perhaps because Sunsets were produced with Panamanian hypos rather than CA or Columbian cross hypos?? It seems like a Co-Dom trait, since there is a different look from Super to normal HypoXHogg, rather than just a Dominant trait found in normal hypos, since you can't for sure tell a super from a hypo in a normal litter....I just don't know...these are just thoughts...Perhaps, someone else can give a better answer.

Delusions of Grandeur feed the EGO...

i think it just has to do with the market right now. the snakes are so desierable, because they seem to get the best of both world when looking at the two bloodlines involved. having a sunset is like having a homozygous hypo and the added bonus of the hog coloration. it seems to be the most valuable cross (which normaly do not do well when speaking value). i believe this is due to both bloodlines being classified as BCI. i would assume that as the number of available animals (sunsets) increases, the prices will go down just as with all other new morphs. sometimes the market works in weird ways. you have to admit they are a beautiful example of how mans influences can work out.

I have seen quite a few Sunsets some of them are awesome and some are not so awesome. I think only the highest quality Sunsets will get the $5,000 price tag. I have seen lower quality Sunsets selling for $2500 this year. I think its alot like how you can buy a hypo for $250 or you can get a top quality Salmon for $1500 thats a big jump in price also it just depends on the quality of animal you are looking for.
Just to clear things up a little bit about the Panamanian hypo making Sunsets thing. The D&M Sunset line was not made using his '92 import female Panamanian. The founder animals of the D&M Sunsets came from Tip Powers.

I believe that it was the result of a male Panamanian hypo. I could be wrong, I don't have a photographic memory. So, the guy stating this was wrong and there is no Panamanian hypo influence, just normal CA or Columbian cross type of hypo influence?
Just trying to figure it all out.

Yes I believe it was Ed Liley that said that, he was mistaken however. Thanks Vinnie

Yup that was me, Thats what I was told.. But I have heard about them starting with Tip Powers too.

I think the sunsets are more than folks may think.. And I think the hog blood has a lot to do with it. I'm just waiting to prove my therory before I spout off about it.
