Many people use wild bird seed and sift out the sunflower seeds. Any mixes should not have sunflower or cracked corn as both have sharp edges and can cause problmes. That is probably the cheapest. I buy 100% red or white millet and have used it for years. It runs from $14-16 for a 50# bag. It is easy to clean and looks nice. Everyone has a different theory as to what to use. If you are getting a hatchling, just use paper towels until it gets bigger as that is the safest for the little ones.
