Some of us (ME) can't figure out what type of digital camera to get with a large 2.5" inch screen...2.0" at the very least. OR how many megapixels are enough. Is 5 enough, or is 6-8 better.

Going to take pictures like yours, probably rarely blow any up, but might if its a good one. And take night scenes/pics of people at parties...

Curious what other people are using.

i got the canon s2.
including shipping and 8 really good rechargeable batteries and a 15 minute charger it was about 480 dollars. here's a link to all of the canon cameras that are available right now. http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=113
i chose this camera because it has a 12x optical zoom, a few fully manuals settings, macro, and super macro mode.
it's 5mp which i feel is enough for just about anyone who isn't going to be blowing them up to make posters or what-not.
there's is the canon g6 which is like 7mp i think, but has a 4x optical zoom and isn't as new which is why i didn't choose it.
if you don't know jack about cameras, it may be helpful to have someone that does, or spend a day or two just going through the manual to figure out how to set the white balance, aperture, and shutter speeds. it is also helpful to know what they all do, and how the counteract eachother etc.
i got mine off of ebay from a seller with good feedback and a nice ad for the camera. i also looked around for a couple of weeks before i purchased the camera.

I have the Canon A80, and it takes good photos. 5 megapixels is plenty if you don't plan on blowing up any photos.

For quality photos of small animals like the geckos, you'll want to really focus on getting a macro function that works well. Some are better than others.

I also think optical zoom is important, and digital zoom is worthless.

Beyond that, I think figuring out the quirks of your individual camera (take LOTS of photos) is the next most important thing. But then, I'm not the worlds greatest photographer, and beyond choosing flash and macro, I'm incompetent with the majority of the settings on my camera.
