Questions about Uroplatus

ETChipotle Nov 13, 2005 06:54 AM

I'm trying to get a sense of what these geckos are like.

Can you take them out of the cage to take thier picture?
We're afraid to do that with the flying gecko because she's a little speedy gonzales. We hardly ever even open her cage.
I handle her about once a year, most of the time my wife won't
let me.

Do they skitter like mad when you try to get them or do they just hope the camouflage will work?

Yes, you can take them out for photos. I have one that will sit on my hands, but the other will jump to the nearest reachable object and start climbing up the wall. He's not so fast I can't grab him, but it still makes me uncomfortable.

I wouldn't handle them unless absolutely necessary. I get mine out about every other week for a shower, and thats it. If I want to snap pictures when they're already out, I do, but they take MUCH better photos when they're showing normal behavior and poses in their cage.

Hey, how you guys doing? Still have the flying geckos hunh, wife still loves em

I have a trio of henkeli, and I have one male that is very friendly and content being handled, the first guy I ever got "Barkley" The female Sinday is okay but will want to jump more. And the other male Mortacai is a bit jumpy also.

You will usually be warned when they are about to jump, they sort of hunch their backs and get ready to spring, LOL very COOL geckos. VERY COOL

I love those pictures, and your description of the warning you get just before they jump. It reminds me of what flying geckos often do, they adjust thier grip, and make a real interested look at where they plan to land, and after about 1.5 seconds, Bing!!

I had flying geckos as a teenager, and recommended them to my wife before we were married.

Our Leopard Gecko has a little warning of rattling her tail before she pounces on prey...

I'm not sure that there is any gecko significantly cooler than a flying gecko, but the leaftail has the similar cool look that the flying gecko has, but it's more of a captive breeder.

I had been reading up on them and decided to get a pair about a month ago, I contacted someone in classifieds that had them, but he only had one left. So I never got it.

But I like the way they look in pics! I will get a pair one day,

Nice to see ya!

i was at a reptile show and it was absolutely crawling with flying geckos. i probably could have gotten some for you dirt cheap too.

but i agree with everyone...very cool looking geckos indeed. once my collection moves up to "mini-zoo" status and i start getting $ from visitors, perhaps ill be able to get other species like flying geckos!
