Indian Star Question

mbuna Nov 13, 2005 11:52 AM

Does Indian star tortoise produce urine or uric acid? I ask the question because I was examining an Indian star tortoise in a petshop which had been kept with about 10 redfoot tortoises, and it urinated. It had been kept on the same diet as the redfoot. I'm wondering if there is any health risk I should be concerned about.

From what I have seen from mine and others, they produce clear urine and sometimes produce what looks like uric acid mixed into the urine. Were they given access to cuttlebone or calcium blocks of some kind? If they were, it may possibly be from excreting calcium? Of all my tortoises, my Star Tortoises bite on the cuttlefish bone more than any others. I have not had any health issues with mine, so I do not think that it is a health problem.
