chameleon didn't lay eggs

jeebadog Nov 13, 2005 05:41 PM

i posted a messages a couple of threads down about my chameleon laying infertile eggs. I'm not sure if she actually laid the eggs or not. Ive been watching her and she still looks a little fat around her belly. im not sure if its fat or the eggs. So far she hasn't been eating like shes used to. Today she didn't even look at the crickets. im beggining to get concerned about her health.

You say you have been watching her...I hope its not when she's digging.

Veileds almost always dig several holes or spend more than one day digging in one hole beforelaying the eggs in my experience. Hopefully your female has just started to think about laying the eggs and will still continue to dig the hole(s) and lay the eggs.

Some signs to watch for that are indicators of trouble are...no longer digging holes, sunken eyes, sits there doing nothing (either in the branches, on the floor of the cage or in the hole), refuses to drink, looking like she is going down hill, digging the hole and acting like she has laid the eggs and filling the hole back in and packing it down.

Some veileds won't eat when they are near egglaying time....so that's not really unusual. Calcium is important during this time.

Keep us posted with her progress.
Hope to hear soon that she has laid the eggs and all went well!

i havent been watching her dig. the odd thing is that she dug a big tunnel and i dont know if she laid them. but she covered the hole and went about her business. But she still isn't eating. However she does look healthy. Ive observed her actually drinking a few times these past days.

Besides she doesnt look as bloated as she did. Im assuming all went well and hope for the best. If anything bad happens ill post a message.

Thanx

I'm glad to hear that you haven't been watching her dig. I always try to mention not watching them dig, because there are people new to the egglaying process or hobby who don't know that they shouldn't watch so I feel I have to mention it.

You said that she is less bloated, so she could have laid the eggs...but I also know of some veileds that will go through the whole process of what would be done to lay the eggs but haven't laid them. These females have usually proven to be eggbound...so I would look for the eggs if I were you. (Of course, these females would not have looked less bloated.)

The fact that she is still not eating bothers me...because I have never had a veiled female that wasn't hungry after it laid the eggs. Because she's not eating, even though she seems fine now, it could be an indication that something might be wrong....so keep an eye on her. An xray at the vet's should show if she has retained eggs or not laid them.
