Does anyone recognise this herper from the 70's?

combs reptiles Nov 13, 2005 07:14 PM

This is me back in 5th grade, in maryland. We went to what was called outdoor shcool, its like a week at camp through shcool.
Anyhow, this guy came and had some snakes and of course i had to get my pic with a burm.
This was my first "big' snake experiance as opposed to the garters and black snakes that i found about my house.
Does anyone recognise the guy holding the snake around my neck?
It would be neat to know who he is.Like i said this photo is probally about 77'-80'.

Thanks
Mike

Mike,
...The t-shirt he is wearing is from Reptile World Serpentarium in Saint Cloud Florida. If you are ever in the central Florida area you could show the PIC to George Van Horn at the Serpentarium and he might be able to tell you who it is.

if you are anywhere close and don't go, you are missing out. That guy in the pic was (I'm guessing) an employee or a fan of the place. When ever I go, the consistant personel is Mr. Van Horn and his wife. It's like going back in time visiting that place. Old school herping at it's best. Venom extracting shows twice daily. It's like 6 bucks to get in. Come and spend hundreds of dollars at Disney World, and about 20 bucks at this place, and I bet your kids will only talk about "that snake place in Florida!"

I've since lost track of things in the last 10 years so don't know how well my memory is on this. If I remember rightly, Mike & Bruce Shwedick started a business in MD called Reptile world back in the 70's...go to schools do reptile shows, etc. I believe Bruce later moved to Florida and does similar type stuff down there (Cyrpess gardens comes to mind). I honestly don't know if Mike is still running the business up in MD or not. I think the one in the photo is Bruce.
